Job Description
Position Summary

The award-winning Brooklyn Park Recreation and Parks Department is looking for highly motivated, team-oriented, and enthusiastic individuals who have a desire to make difference in Brooklyn Park by instructing/coaching sports classes and camps. A youth sports instructor will plan the lesson curriculum and lead sports' classes and camps for youth and will work under the general supervision of the Recreation Program Supervisor. This position will be primarily working various hours between 5:00 – 8:30 p.m., Monday-Thursday and 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., Saturdays late-September – April.

A Youth Sports Instructor is a member of the Recreation and Parks staff team that works together to develop innovative service delivery methods and programs focused on quality partnerships, service to our community and achieving successful results.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate sports skills competently
  • Maintain order and assure participants are following set lesson plans and program policies
  • Promote the sports program through positive relationships with participants and parents
  • Communicate effectively with participants and parents
  • Report to assigned location on time
  • Report any incidents and assist with completing the required report
  • Perform other duties as assigned or apparent
Minimum and Desired Qualifications

No education requirement


  • 16 years of age or older
  • Knowledge of general sports and games, with a willingness to learn leading youth sports programs
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to interact with participants and parents in a responsible and professional manner
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respond with tact and courtesy
  • Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision
  • Ability to effectively work with youth and parents
  • Ability to make rational and appropriate decisions based on established policy and procedure
  • Ability to maturely and appropriate respond to any emergency or incident that may arise
  • Ability to maintain order and security
  • Ability to relate and work effectively with people from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, racial and ethnic backgrounds
  • Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets/exceeds customer expectation and satisfaction
  • Embrace and engage in cultural shift toward Continuous Improvement

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience leading sports classes/camps or head coaching in youth sports with a knowledge of general sports and games
  • Three (3)+ years of experience lead teaching or head coaching baseball, basketball, golf, tennis, volleyball, preschool programs or physical education.
  • Significant experience successfully working with youth and providing customer service
  • Previous experience working with people from various cultural, socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds
  • Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Russian, Somali, Laotian or Vietnamese
