Interfaith Outreach is looking for highly qualified candidates for our Employment Counselor position (full-time, benefit eligible). The Employment Counselor works collaboratively with the Employment Services (ES) staff, other internal teams, and external partners to support clients with their employment goals. The Employment Counselor provides individual and group services to support job seekers in determining a job search plan, coaching around job search skills and securing a job that leads to financial stability.

Core Areas of Responsibility Include:

Client 1:1 and Group Service Delivery
  • Co-facilitate or facilitate new client intakes
  • Develop client employment, skill building and training goal plans
  • Provide individual coaching and support on job search and career planning
  • Coordinate and deliver 1:1 education or group workshops and skill building related to employment decisions, job search and computer skill workshops
  • Administer Self-Directed Search (SDS) and/or O*Net Interest Profiler interest assessments
  • Educate job seekers on high demand job opportunities
  • Connect participants to educational and employment opportunities when applicable
  • Participate in team meetings with clients and other staff; check in on progress and revise work plans as needed
  • Continually refine, strengthen and deliver curricula to individuals and groups
Volunteer Program Management
  • Coordinate volunteer training efforts for the team
  • Attend volunteer manager meetings through Community Engagement
  • Manage volunteer schedules and time in VolunteerHub; support team in learning and using tool
  • Be accessible to volunteers for support and questions
  • Identify volunteer opportunities and lead job description creation
  • Lead volunteer supervision, support, scheduling and recognition
  • Oversight of Job Search Lab Operations, Curriculum and Communications
  • Oversee lab leader scheduling and training; ensure appropriate staff support
  • Ensure communication between front desk and job search lab
  • Create and maintain Lab Leader information guide
  • Maintain class curriculum
  • Perform general lab equipment maintenance and manage supplies
  • Oversee communication of ES offerings via all outlets (website, flyers, email distribution)
  • Oversee updating of flyers and promotional materials
Program Support
  • Maintain current and accurate client information in client database and files
  • Support departmental and agency procedures related to accurate data collection and reporting
  • Support training and employer partner development
  • Participate in team efforts toward ongoing program improvements
  • Stay abreast of employment demand trends, local employer preferences
Agency and Team Support
  • Participate in the welcoming, orientation and training of new team members
  • Actively support the success of colleagues
  • Participate in team efforts to continually grow in our understanding of the needs of our clients and strategies to serve them
  • Participate in and support Interfaith Outreach special events

Schedule Requirements:

Due to COVID-19, this position is primarily remote from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. with 1-2 days in the office.

Typical hours have been 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. with the exception of the Wednesday shift, 11:30 a.m.-8 p.m. Potential for Monday evenings until 6 p.m. Occasional agency evening and weekend commitments.

Required Qualifications Include:

  • A combination of education and work experience as follows:
                o Associate Degree and 2 years work experience supporting job seekers or
       o BA/BS in Human Services or related field and 1 year experience supporting job seekers
       o Minimum of 1 year experience in human service nonprofit setting


  • Knowledge of the job search process and relevant skills (resumes/cover letters, interviewing skills, job search strategies)
  • Experience working with clients with diverse racial, economic and education levels; commitment to equity and inclusivity
  • Ability to professionally interface with a variety of stakeholders i.e. job seekers, team and cross-program staff, volunteers, employers, training partners, nonprofit partners and community members
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; effective interpersonal relation skills
  • Knowledge of labor market trends and industry recognized sources of job information
  • GCDF credential or willingness to obtain
  • Proven networking and partner-building skills
  • Experience administering interest inventories (Strong Interest Inventory, Self-Directed Search, O*Net or others) and familiarity with resulting Holland Code significance
  • Intermediate computer skills including internet, email, Microsoft Office, Google Drive, and ability to instruct job seekers on computer skills; willing and able to learn other software/database applications as needed
Preferred Qualifications:
  • GCDF or employment counseling experience
  • Knowledge of short-term employment training options
  • Familiarity with local recruiting trends and processes and/or recruitment and hiring
  • Experience with training/teaching individuals or groups
  • Understanding of the issues faced by low-income, unemployed individuals
  • Job development experience or job training experience
  • Experience with immigrant job seekers and/or ELL job seekers
  • Experience supporting job seekers with multiple barriers to employment
  • Knowledge of basic counseling skills
  • Experience with mentor or job shadow programming
  • Program development and support experience
  • Bilingual in English and Somali or Russian

Compensation: $43,472 - $48,048 annually. We offer a comprehensive benefits package.
